Statement on the passing of Professor Tom Dunne

28.04.2025

The National University of Ireland was saddened to hear of the loss of Tom Dunne on 15 April 2025.
Emeritus Professor of History at University College Cork, his impact extended even beyond that role.

At NUI, we remember his contributions as a member of our Senate from 1998 to 2007. Following that, he edited The National University of Ireland 1908 – 2008 Centenary Essays, a landmark publication which took a look back at NUI’s origins, influences and developments through various lenses.

He also gave the 1984 O’Donnell Lecture, entitled ‘Maria Edgeworth and the Colonial Mind’.

His work as a lecturer has helped pave the way for many students who studied history at UCC, as well as the wider student population as Dean of Arts at UCC in the 1990s. As well as being an influential historian, he published memoirs and essays and worked closely with Cork University Press.

NUI offers its deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues and former students of Professor Tom Dunne. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal.
