Professor Eeva Leinonen

Welcoming Professor Eeva Leinonen as the fifth President of Maynooth University, the Chancellor Dr Maurice Manning said ‘Professor Leinonen’s appointment is one of great significance not only for Maynooth, but also for the National University of Ireland as a whole and for the sector. It is important not only as a welcome breakthrough in terms of gender equality but also because of her strong international background in university leadership and her achievements in research. As the first person from the mainland of Europe to be appointed as head of an NUI constituent university, she brings a different cultural background with fresh new influences and insights into the role. I welcome this important appointment and wish Professor Leinonen every success in her Presidency’.

The Chancellor also paid tribute to outgoing President Professor Philip Nolan on his many achievements during his term of office. Dr Manning noted the exponential growth in the student population at Maynooth, the expansion of postgraduate provision, the enhancement of the campus infrastructure and the strengthening of research capacity. Wishing him well for the future, he said ‘Professor Nolan has earned the gratitude of the people of Ireland for his outstanding contribution to the national effort to contain the Covid pandemic and enable a gradual return to normality in the nation’s educational, social, cultural and economic life’.
