Statement on the passing of John Bruton, former Taoiseach

06.02.2024

The National University of Ireland is saddened to hear of the passing of John Bruton, tenth Taoiseach of Ireland and former Ambassador of the European Union to the United States, among many other respected roles during his political career, which spanned 35 years.

John Bruton, a graduate of University College Dublin, applied his expertise to many key roles as Ireland approached and entered the twenty-first century. His work demonstrated Ireland’s commitment to the development of the European Union and he also supported the peace process in Northern Ireland during his time as Taoiseach. His economic expertise served both Ireland and the EU well, as he served as Minister for Finance and also worked on the Stability and Growth Pact.

In 2005, John Bruton received an honorary Doctorate of Laws in a ceremony at Maynooth University, and in 2022, we had the pleasure of his company at the launch of Stephen Collins’ Ireland's Call: Navigating Brexit in Merrion Square. His is a legacy of vision and diligence which will continue to inspire Ireland’s leaders.”
