NUI Chancellor welcomes appointment of Minister for Higher Education

Press Release:
NUI Chancellor welcomes appointment of
Minister for Higher Education

Welcoming the appointment of Simon Harris as Minister for Higher Education, Innovation and Research, the Chancellor of the National University of Ireland Dr Maurice Manning said ‘the appointment for the first time of a member of Cabinet as Minister for Higher Education is great news.

It gives recognition to the central role played by universities and other higher education institutions in contemporary society and their influence on the social, economic and cultural life of the nation.

The importance of the scientific knowledge and expertise provided by the universities in managing of the Covid-19 health emergency has become increasingly apparent. Similarly, as we emerge from the crisis, in my view, the universities, with strong government support, will have an significant contribution to make to national recovery.

Because of the crisis, there are serious challenges immediately facing higher education. It will be hugely beneficial to have a full Cabinet Minister supporting the sector.
