Artwork

Linda McCann applies oil paint in several layers using different consistencies of paint, from thin washes to dry brush marks, both obscuring and revealing the history of her paintings underneath. The lively interactions of gestural line and colour expose a series of repeated motifs associated with sewing, fabrics and garment construction suggesting the figurative in an abstract composition. It is the observation of her immediate surroundings and motifs associated with hand-made craft that find their way into her work from a love of 'making' and re-purposing fabric and discarded clothing.
Central to Linda's practice is the crossover of skills involved in sewing and painting, decision, immediacy, repair, observation, and problem solving - not to mention pattern, shape colour and texture. All of these are what hold her attention when making a painting.
Linda feels that making a piece of work is a physical thinking process with the haptic sense of touch and the alchemy of paint all part of the tactile investigation.
